Top Ten Tuesday: 2014 Books!

Wow, today's topic is quite difficult - Best Books I Read in 2014! To make it easier, I'm going to ignore rereads - so it's become best NEW-TO-ME books. Also, I've got a pile from the library to read in the next couple weeks, and that pile has some books that I think might apply to this list once I read them. (Ahem, Blue Lily, Lily Blue.) So this is technically best books from January 1 2014 to December 16 2014.

Let's tackle this. Warning - caps lock abounds. These are my favorites, after all. :-)

(Covers link to Goodreads, titles link to my posts.)

Wow I just read this last January? It feels longer than that. This book is magical and well written and everything good combined. *blows kisses to it*

PERFECTION. That is all. PURE PERFECTION.
I know I keep saying this, but - it shall be a classic someday. I KNOW IT. It makes me go all CAPS LOCK WHEN I WRITE ABOUT IT SEE? I CAN'T HELP IT.

I love anthropology and exploring cultures - especially their folktales and myths. This book combines two creatures from two different cultures' folktales, and sticks them in New York. The result is simply magical.

IT MADE ME CRY IN PUBLIC AND I DIDN'T EVEN CARE.

The next book, Blue Lily Lily Blue, is staring at me and I will read it soon. Very soon. Or I may just shrivel up in the corner. I need it for my health, you see.

SLAVIC FANTASY! Suggestion to all authors - if you are interested in exploring a new genre, consider Slavic Fantasy. If you do, then you will have me as your adoring fan for the rest of your life. Just saying.

This book is short. But that doesn't mean it's simple. It is FILLED with commentary and depth and creepy animal-human-monsters.

Fairy-tale retellings! Science fiction! Cyborgs!
Also, I met Marissa Meyer in person. I WILL NEVER STOP BRAGGING ABOUT THIS.

10. The Once and Future King by T. H. White
Okay, I'm only halfway through this one. But I definitely like it, and I have a feeling it will only get better. A point in it's favor is - I expected a serious Arthurian tale, and instead I got goofy antics, a snarky owl, some weird anachronistic references, and an utterly HILARIOUS Merlin. When humor - well-written humor - gets jumped on me like that.... I'm very pleased. And so it gets it's spot on this list.

  1. Some of my favorites! I have heard of The Once and Future King and I'm pretty sure my family has it but I had not idea it was humerous! I'll have to read it now. :)

    1. Its humorous AND heartwrenching AND a social commentary. Quite all-encompassing. :-)

  2. I've only read Dream Thieves (I LOVED IT!) and Ruin and Rising (which I didn't enjoy as much)

I NEED TO READ THE OTHER BOOKS!! I'VE HEARD SUCH AMAZING THINGS AND I WISH I DIDN'T NEED TO SLEEP SO THAT I COULD READ THEM ALL AND AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!

    Great list! ;)

    1. READ THEM ALL! THEY ARE ALL SO WONDERFUL.

      Sleep? Who needs sleep?

(Actually, I love sleep. Though it would be nice if reading/down time would suffice for sleep.)

  3. THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING!!! Love, love, love this book. The whole bit about the Questing Beast and everything is hilarious, just prepare yourself for the end. It took me quite a while to get over it.

    1. YES the Questing Beast and her romance is utterly wonderful! I love it.
And I know how it all ends from my other Arthurian adventures, so I'm just bracing myself for White's version. I'm sure it will be all painful.

  4. 1. Ooh, The Night Circus made it to #1! I really need to read it soon -- it seems like something everyone will like, and of course, THAT COVER. I just can't resist illustrated covers. I still don't really know what it's about, though, so I'll have to check up on that. :D

    2. This is the second time I'm seeing Code Name Verity today! I remember getting an ARC of it way back when it was published, but dropped it because it was so ridiculously slow-moving. Yup. Regretting that now. I definitely will give the book another go and be more patient, lol. Have you read Rose Under Fire? It's by the same author and oh my gosh -- TEARS. It's so emotional I cried. <3

    4. ANOTHER BOOK I HAVE HEARD LOADS ABOUT BUT STILL HAVEN'T READ. What is wrong with me I don't even know. T_T I watched the film, though, so that counts? A little? Haha. Nah, I'm sure the film has nothing on the book.

    5. Yesss, this book was awesome! The first book was interesting but confusing, but The Dream Thieves totally took things to a whole new level. I am now a fervent Blue and Gansey shipper. NOTHING SHALL COME BETWEEN THEM. And I love how Maggie took the time to flesh out Ronan's character more, too. I didn't like him much in Raven Boys, but whew, that opinion changed drastically when I read this.

    6. This book would have made it to my best book of 2014 list if I hadn't read and cried over Tokyo Ghoul but that's another story. xD Anyway, I love how this trilogy ended. I mean, I'm sad that it's over, but I couldn't be happier with the ending. MALINA FOREVER! And don't even get me started on the gorgeous cover. It's just -- YOU BEAUTIFUL SERIES, YOU.

    9. Eeep, second time I'm seeing Cress on a TTT list, too! I'm hoping to get to Scarlet reaaaaally soon, especially since I received it as a Christmas gift. :D

Great picks, Sophia! Kinda embarrassed that I've only read, like, 2 books here, but I WILL get to the rest of them!

    1. Note: these are not in order. If I had to pick a #1, it would probably be Code Name Verity. WHICH YOU SHOULD SO READ. I own Rose Under Fire, and it's staring at me from the shelf. "Read me!" it whispers. "NOW!"

BLUESY! MALINA! I approve of all your ships most wholeheartedly. And I also agree with you - the Grisha series ended perfectly. I've heard some people aren't happy with it, but I don't know what they're talking about. :-)

DEFINITELY read these - especially Code Name Verity and The Book Thief. Oh, and the Night Circus. Those three books win for "most unique."

  5. Ahh, you just reminded me that I still haven't read Code Name Verity or The Golem and Jinni! Too many books and not enough time.

But I hope you can get to them!
