Writing Wish List (and BUNNIES!)

There are a lot of stories in my head.

Actually, let's change that.

There are a lot of plot bunnies in my head. A huge messy rabbit cage of cuddly little plot bunnies hopping about and bumping into each other.

I'd like to write them all someday, and this post is a list of some of them.

Other bloggers' writerly wish lists have been floating around the internet lately, and I believe the first one originated at Kara's blog, Diary of a Teen Writer. (*cheers*)
Some other lists I've read are Emily's and Cait's. And now here's mine!

*flails*

1. Slavic Fantasy

You all know how much I love that the Grisha Trilogy is Slavic fantasy. We need more of it, and I plan to contribute to this most worthy endeavor!

2. Actually, any Non-Western Fantasy

You know who was the king of fantasy-diversity? Lloyd Alexander. That guy experimented with a bunch of different cultures in his books. And I want to try some. Nordic fantasy? African fantasy? East Asian fantasy? Inuit fantasy? Middle eastern fantasy? GIVE ME ALL THE CULTURES. I will rock them all.

3. Something Paranormal

I've never written anything supernatural or paranormal. It seems like it would be so much fun! I would do all my research on all the details of paranormal activity - and it would all be super ancient and traditional-like. It would also have a girl werewolf with a completely normal, average, boring (ie, human) boyfriend who has no clue that his girlfriend is... kind of different.
(This also has a Pinterest board attached to it.)

4. Something Arthurian - but with a modern twist.
King Arthur is a college kid, and his round table is his gang. I don't know where I would go with this, but it would be fun writing the characters!

5. A romance in which the girl chooses herself

I'm getting a bit tired of love triangles, but done well, they can still succeed. What I absolutely dislike is when there is some greater danger, but the girl is pondering whom to marry. Romance isn't everything! Sometimes, there's, like, danger of death, perhaps? coughKatnisscough

just no
I'd love to write a book in which the girl realizes that a relationship just isn't working out right now - and chooses herself.
(Actually, this is sort of in the works. I haven't started actually writing it, but I DO have a Pinterest board. So that's something.)
(Of course, I could also go with the guy choosing himself. It works either way.)

6. A mystery that involves a code within music.

I've written one mystery before - a short story - and it was fun. But it was also super hard. Making sure all the clues line up, all the paths lead to the ending, all the motivations make sense - gosh, that was a lot of work. But I'd like to try it again. And I'd like it to involve music.
Something like: a violinist sounds bad, but he's actually sending a code to his friend outside his window.

7. A story with super twist ending.
(I suppose this could sort of fall into #7.)
Because plotting isn't my forte, twist endings generally don't happen for me. But I'd love to write a story (probably a short story) where the last sentence reveals that whole extra dimension and the reader goes WHOA DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING

Wouldn't that be cool? But it would take a LOT of skill. Gonna have to work on that.

8. An underwater/mermaid book

I've just recently started thinking about mermaids a lot. They're usually not my thing. But perhaps I should experiment?

9. Something with mirrors as the gateway to an alternate reality

Because that's both creepy and awesome at the same time.

So now you've met some of my favorite plot bunnies! (I'm not a very fair bunny mama. I play favorites.)

Come, my plot bunnies! I will feed you and you shall grow into big strong novels!
~Sophia

Tell me about YOUR writerly wish list! Introduce me to your plot bunnies! (You know this entire post has been an excuse for me to google adorable bunny gifs.) And tell me which one of my story ideas absolutely MUST happen.

goodbye for now

  1. oh, my gosh. Can you please write the modern Arthurian story?! xD "the round table is his gang" PLEASE. :)

I also have many, many, many plot bunnies. I've always wanted to write a super cool sci-fi book (probably leaning int to the cyberpunk thing). But I want to write a Peter Pan or Rapunzel based story, whether it's a re-telling or not I don't know. And a super hero novel... :)

of course, I always go with fantasy involving dragons too... :D

    1. I WILL WRITE THE ARTHUR THING. I have some character profiles already. Oh, and that one does have a Pinterest too: http://www.pinterest.com/literaryrambles/camelot-21st-cent-wip/

Ooh sci fi! I tried one once. It failed.
      And retellings are always awesome.

      DRAGONS YES

    2. Oh, oh, oh! I've seen that board and didn't pay attention at all to the title. *facepalm* :)

and the Slavic Fantasy: Please do. I've only read the Grisha Trilogy for that type of fantasy but I loved it so much. I would love to see more :) I don't know the first thing about it, so YOU need to do it! :DDD

(so far I've failed with the sci-fi & I haven't even touched re-telling for fear I'll do something wrong and upset people. Oh well! Someday, someday... That's the fun part about being a writer though: coming up with ideas!)

  2. This is such an awesome (and varied) list. Mermaids seem to be having a revival, I think you're the second or third wishlist I've seen to mention mermaids. But the mirror idea is EXCELLENT, I'm totally loving that (I'm a massive fan of the 'parallel universe' thing, so the idea sounds super awesome).

I did a wish list the other day, you should totally check it out! :)

P.S. Those bunnies are ADORABLE. ^_^

    1. Mirrors/parallel universes have been in my mind for a good five years now and I never have done anything with them. Perhaps now is the time... :-)

And I will definitely check your list out! I'm loving reading everyone's!

  3. Cool ideas! I always have ten million ideas and no writing skill, or at least the patience to sit down and write the book.
I'm sure you'll get at least one of your ideas done someday and hopefully all of them! :)

    1. Thank you! I hope so too!

You should make your own list. I'd be interested to read it, and maybe it'll motivate you to write something! And it doesn't have to be a book - my violin/mystery one is definitely short story material, not novel.

  4. Maybe it's just because I happen to like violins, but the violin plot bunny sounds interesting to me. And so does the mirror story. I don't know why, but mirrors are always interesting. :-)

    1. I actually started the violin one a couple years ago, and then got distracted. I need to return to it!

  5. I love the idea of King Arthur in college!!

And I'm also glad to know that I'm not the only one with plot bunnies popping up everywhere. I think the two most interesting of my plot bunnies would be a re-telling of a fairy tale like rapunzel or cinderella where the girls are the heroines instead of the damsels and then something sci-fi --which cracks me up because I'm not really into sci-fi but the world-building aspect of it really intrigues me. I also think I like the challenge of it all. Great list of plot bunnies!!

    1. Oooh retellings are the best! And a few years ago, I really wanted to try sci fi, but then it sort of failed because I had never read any. But I'd love to try it again sometime! It's super fun.

  6. I have so much love for the gifs in this post. YOUR BUNNIES ARE ADORABLE. Feed these little things, feeeeed them so they grow and be amazing and fabulous. I AGREE WITH MORE FANTASY OF DIFFERENT CULTURES. Enough with the English fantasy already. argghhh. I want to see some more Asian/Russian/African....or even like Islander or something! Whyyyy isn't it written more of?! SO YOU MUST WRITE IT, SOPHIA! YOU MUST!

  7. I can't believe I've just now discovered your blog... it's so cool! OMG, the King Arthur idea sounds amazing. I may just copy you on that. And the bunnies are adorable :)
Also, I just now noticed you're reading The Once and Future King. I read that for school, it was realllllly long but good!

    1. I'm glad you found me too! :-) Go ahead and copy me - I'd love to see how you do it. I'm sure it would be totally different!

I'm loving Once and Future King, but you're right - it is long.

  8. These ideas are really interesting, and now I definitely have to write my own writing wish list!
Non-Western Fantasy sounds really interesting; I think I'd read it :-)
Do you know the "Eon" books by Alison Goodman? That's a kind of an Asian Fantasy, so maybe you'd like it :-)
Actually, you could also write a different kind of Western Fantasy by writing Native Americans Fantasy, but that's just a suggestion ;-)

  9. These are awesome; I in particular love the idea of slavic or non-western fantasy. I mean, part of that is that I wouldn't mind writing some, but I feel like I need examples before I can go with anything in particular, so having more ideas like that would make me thrilled. Writing twists is also awesome! I hope you get to finish your works!
