Top Ten Tuesday: Books in My Beach Bag

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.
Today's topic is Books That Will Be In My Beach Bag this Summer! (Frankly, I'm not sure how different this is from June 17th's topic, Books on my Summer TBR list - unless today I'm supposed to list the kind of lighthearted books I'd read on a beach. If that's the case, then let me tell you: I don't read specific kinds of books in specific places. And if #2 (or #3) makes me cry while I'm sitting on the sand surrounded by all the people at a Chicago beach - who cares.)
Trust me, this was hard to narrow down to ten... :-) I've been waiting to read these books for months, and now that school's out, I'm going on a mission to the library!

1. Cinder by Marissa Meyer

2. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - just in time for the movie!

3. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

4. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

5. Allegiant by Veronica Roth

6. All the Harry Potter Books!
(HBP gets featured because it's my favorite cover)
7. The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

8. Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell - it's my Classics Club Spin #6 book, so I've got to finish it by July 7th!

9. Dune by Frank Herbert - my sister is reading this and I  don't believe how jealous I am! Who knew that I could develop book jealousy?

10. The Once and Future King by T. H. White. For the Arthurian Literature Challenge, but also because for some reason, a couple people have strongly recommended it to me very recently. It's a sign! :-)

What are some books in your summer beach bag?

  1. OMG amazing list! I've always wanted to read Gone With The Wind because it's one of my favorite movies <3 And 1-4 are 4 of my favorite books so I obviously highly recommend them all :D Enjoy!!

    1. Thanks Nicole! I actually have never seen the GWTW movie, but I'm planning on it for sure :)

And I'm glad you love books 1-4! I've been looking forward to reading them for ages!

  2. Gone with the Wind is on my list too. :) I read Dune earlier this year and it is good! It was my first Sci-fi read so a little difficult to get into but once I was in I was hooked!

    1. GWTW might not last long enough to actually make it into my beach bag - I started two days ago, and I'm already a quarter done!
My sister is sitting next to me right now reading Dune, so when she finishes the book, I'm snatching it up. :)

      Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Thanks! I'm glad you liked The Golem and The Jinni. I hadn't heard TOO much about it, and I like to have assurances of quality before I start a book. :) I'm looking forward to reading it!

  4. Sophia, you're going to have a whirlwind of a summer with all those books -- nearly all of them are my favorites! So yeah, I think you're good to go this year. ;)

    1. CINDER was amazing. End of story. Even though I had huge expectations (with all those five-star reviews and raving people on Twitter), Marissa Meyer managed to wow me, and I don't even think this should be counted as a retelling of Cinderella because it's so different. Excluding the main character's name and the overall plot, of course. But there were so many other elements she added in that made it one-of-a-kind. I really hope you love it!

    2. To be honest, I don't really know what the fuss around TFiOS is all about. I read it late last year and the only good thing I can say about it is that it made me cry at the end. And I wasn't even that invested into the characters or the story as a whole. Maybe I was feeling particularly emotional that time... Oh well, I'm in the minority, so you'll probably enjoy it much more than I did. Still pumped for the movie, though!

    3. Let me tell you, Elizabeth Wein is a fantastic writer. Um... even though I kinda gave up on CODE NAME VERITY when I got the chance to read an ARC of it. *awkward laugh* But I read her other book, ROSE ON FIRE, which was so much better and also made me cry and all the feels just killed me! So I'm most likely going to give CNV another go, and this time push to the end because I remember the beginning being kind of boring. :P

    4. This is one of my favorite reads of all time -- it's probably on the same level as HP, and let me tell you, I ADORE the HP series. It's the reason I got to reading books in the first place! So yeah, prepare to have your mind blown by SHADOW & BONE. It's so amazing words can't even do it justice.

    5. I still need to read this! I read the first two books and liked them (though I preferred DIVERGENT more), but so far I haven't been hearing too many good reviews about the final one -- I'm kind of nervous over here. But I have the book so I'm going to have to read it sooner or later, once my TBR pile decreases significantly. Can't wait to hear what you think!

    6. I would say, "YOU HAVEN'T READ HARRY POTTER YET?!" but I'm stumbling across more and more people who haven't, so it doesn't really come as a shock! Still, believe all those fantastic things you've heard about this series, because it's even better than SHADOW & BONE (though the two are very close) and seven books quite frankly isn't enough for me. One of the best fantasy series of all time. I REALLY hope you love it, Sophia! Speaking of HP, I can't wait for the latest film to come out! Witches and wizards in the Roaring Twenties -- it can't get much better than that! ;D

The rest I don't really know much about, but I've been wanting to read GONE WITH THE WIND, too, since it's a pretty popular classic and I do love me some good romance. I'm just worried I might get bored by it because, well, I don't really have a high tolerance for slow books. :/ Great list!

    1. Waa this comment was awesome! Thanks for going in-depth and personal! :-)

I am soo soo SOO excited for this summer. I've been waiting for months to just READ, and it's actually happening! Yippee!

Oh and just to clarify: the HP thing is a reread - sorta. I HAVE read them all except book 7. I didn't grow up on them like a lot of people did (I'm sure you did). The Narnia books were the books of my childhood, and for some reason I didn't get to HP until I was 13 or so. Then I devoured them so quickly my mom told me to take a break - so I paused after book 4, and devoured Jane Austen. Then after returning to HP, I got so depressed by the ending of book 6 that I decided to take an even longer break, and I never got around to book 7. So there you have it. :-) Though, fun fact: I haven't seen any of the movies!

Gone With the Wind is just spectacular, and you shouldn't be intimidated by it's size. I'm almost all through it now (I just got home from a 10 hr flight from a vacation in Italy), and it rarely slows. I feel like the MC just keeps getting misfortunes and problems thrown at her, one after the other! :-) The main character is not at all a contemplative girl, very straightforward and single-minded, so that helps with the pace too.

Again, thanks for the awesome comment, and have fun with your own summer reading!

    2. Oh I thought you hadn't read HP AT ALL- but it's all good. I would like to know what you think of Golem and Jinni & Once and Future King, because I've been hearing about them.
And I hope you enjoy the others!

    3. Haha, apparently I scared a couple people there :-)
I'll definitely let you know about those books - I hope enjoy them too!
